Reaching more than 90 million viewers, the Super Bowl typically ranks very high in the Nielsen ratings. However, the National Football League’s championship game is not known for just the game, but for the advertisements, too. A 30-second ad during Super Bowl XLV (2011) on CBS cost between $2.5 and $2.8 billion. During the 2010 Super Bowl in NBC, the record cost for a Super Bowl commercial was set at $3 million a piece. Due to the high price and built anticipation each year for these ads, much buzz is usually generated before the game is even started about what is going to be the best one of them all.
Superbowlads.com has already come up with their list of what they think to be the top 10 Super Bowl commercials. Here are a few of my favorites:
Volkswagen: Darth Vader Kid
The young Darth Vader tries to test his powers on everything from the washing machine, to the dog and even a doll. He has no luck, until his father returns home with the brand new Volkswagen Passat, and tricks Darth Vader into thinking his powers are what is turning the Passat’s lights on, where as it is really the dad with his keys. This commercial shows viewers that by driving a Passat, they can be powerful too, and a bit magical, like Darth Vader.
Doritos: House Sitting
The house sitter uses Doritoes to fix all of the messes he made while his friend was away. He brought the fish and the plant back to life and even Grandpa whose ashes were spilled moments before the homeowner walked into the door. Doritos makes its viewers think that those great tasting triangular chips can do anything.
Best Buy: Ozzy Osbourne and Justin Bieber
Ozzy Osbourne starts off introducing the 4G network, where he is soon stopped and told to re-take with the newer version of 5G. The screen then states that, “technology moves fast” and in comes young pop star, Justin Beiber, as Ozzy is confused and getting “left behind” as stated, because of his age. Beiber then introduces “Beiber, 6G fever” as the Osbournes question what 6G and a Beiber are. All of this is showing that when its time to upgrade, Best Buy will buy it back.
